Tarot

A modern tarot deck is a set of 78 cards used for divination, introspection, and spiritual guidance. It consists of two main sections: the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana.

The Major Arcana includes 22 cards that represent significant life events or spiritual lessons, while the Minor Arcana contains 56 cards divided into four suits—Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles—each representing different aspects of life. Each suit includes cards numbered from Ace to Ten, along with four court cards: Page, Knight, Queen, and King. Tarot decks are often beautifully illustrated, reflecting various artistic styles and interpretations, and are used globally to gain insights into the past, present, and future.

Tarot cards originated in 15th-century Italy as a card game called "tarocchi," created for the nobility. By the late 18th century, tarot transitioned from a game to a tool for divination, largely due to suggestions of hidden ancient Egyptian knowledge. Jean-Baptiste Alliette, known as Etteilla, further popularised tarot for occult purposes by publishing the first book on tarot divination. In the 19th century, tarot was integrated into the practices of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, with members like A.E. Waite and Aleister Crowley significantly contributing to its modern symbolism. The Rider-Waite-Smith deck, created in 1909, set the standard for many subsequent decks.

One of the most dramatic cards in the Major Arcana is the Tower, traditionally depicting a tall tower struck by lightning, with figures falling from it. This card symbolizes sudden upheaval, chaos, and the breakdown of old structures, leading to significant change and transformation. Despite its seemingly negative connotations, the Tower card represents clearing away false beliefs and opportunities for new growth. The Tower card embodies dramatic change, the dismantling of the old to make way for the new, and is a powerful catalyst for necessary transformation. It challenges us to let go of old habits and beliefs, making room for a stronger, more truthful foundation in our lives.
